Free Crochet Pattern for Newborn Mermaid Cocoon

Our cocoon is built around the real crocodile stitch — the same overlapping, fanned scale technique used in classic mermaid tail blankets. Instead of a flat surface, each round adds a new layer of raised, shell-like scales. They catch the light and shift color as they go, fading from a deep purple at the shoulders down to a soft teal at the fin.
It’s the difference between a costume and a piece that looks like it belongs on a mermaid.
What Makes This Design Different
A few details we’re especially proud of:
- A true ombré gradient — purple → indigo → teal, worked directly into the scales rather than added afterward
- A starfish-shaped bodice with two tapered “wing” points, so the silhouette reads as a little starfish top rather than a plain onesie
- Lilac shell appliqués and a flower-topped hood, for the small details that show up beautifully in close-up shots
- A ribbed tail fin, worked in back-loop-only stitches for a structured, sculptural flare instead of a floppy end
Every one of these choices was made with the newborn photoshoot in mind. Think of the way the piece drapes on a blanket, how it photographs from the side, and how the scales catch light in a studio setup.
