We’re excited to share the Mermaid Dreams Cocoon — a full-body crochet swaddle designed for newborn photography, made up of 7 hand-crafted pieces that come together into one show-stopping mermaid tail.
What You’ll Need
- DK / Light Worsted yarn (100% acrylic recommended), approx. 400–450g
- 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
- 5 buttons (18–20mm)
- Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers
Finished size: 0–3 months, approx. 60cm (23.5″) length, 52cm (20.5″) wingspan flat.
- Cocoon Body — worked top-down in rounds, shaping from the shoulders down into the tail
- Mermaid Fin — the signature tail flare, worked in rows and seamed at the center
- Left & Right Wings — triangular side panels that wrap and close the swaddle
- Crochet Cap (Hood) — a snug, rounded cap worked top-down
- Shell Appliques — two decorative shells stitched onto the front
- Buttons — for the button band closure along the side
- Flower/Starfish Decoration — the finishing touch sewn to the top of the cap
What makes this cocoon so special is the crocodile stitch (shell stitch) used on the lower body — it’s what creates that beautiful, overlapping “mermaid scale” look. Each row is built from 5-double-crochet shell clusters worked into the shells of the row below, and the scale sections shift shade as you move down the body, creating a natural ombré fade from teal to deep purple.

- A crocheted starfish (made in 2 pieces and sewn together) finishes the top of the cap
